Cambridge CAE (C1 Advanced) speaking exam strategies

The Cambridge CAE (C1 Advanced) Speaking exam tests your ability to communicate effectively in English. To excel, candidates should employ several key strategies.

First, be familiar with the structure of the exam, which consists of four parts: an interview, a long turn, a collaborative task, and a discussion. Knowing what each part demands will help you manage your time and responses effectively.

In Part 1, focus on answering concisely and confidently. These personal questions are straightforward, so use this opportunity to relax, speak clearly, and avoid long, rambling answers.

For Part 2, the long turn, practice describing and comparing pictures. Make sure to describe both photos clearly, while focusing on similarities and differences. Use appropriate linking words like “in contrast” or “similarly,” and ensure your comparison flows smoothly.

During Part 3, the collaborative task, it’s crucial to work with your partner. Listen carefully, respond to their ideas, and expand on them rather than dominating the conversation. Using polite language to interrupt or express disagreement is also important here.

Finally, in Part 4, the discussion, you will be asked follow-up questions. Support your answers with reasons and provide examples where possible. The key here is to develop your ideas, avoid yes/no responses, and engage in a natural conversation.

Overall, staying calm, practicing fluency, and building a good rapport with your partner will help you achieve a high score.
